KUALA LUMPUR:
Police have arrested a man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol after his vehicle was involved in an accident that injured six individuals, including children, on the Kajang-Semenyih bypass road early this morning.

Kajang police chief Naazron Abdul Yusof said the 1.20am accident involved a Range Rover Velar sports utility vehicle (SUV), driven by a 51-year-old man, and a Mazda van.

“The accident occurred when the driver of the SUV suddenly lost control and hit the back of a van, causing the vehicle to overturn,” he said.

“The van driver and five passengers, aged seven to 51, suffered injuries and are receiving medical attention. The SUV driver was not injured.”

Naazron said the SUV driver has been remanded for two days until tomorrow.

The case is being investigated under Section 44(1A) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which relates to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs causing non-fatal injury.

Section 44(1A) provides for a prison sentence of between seven to 10 years.

First-time offenders also face fines of RM30,000 to RM50,000 and a minimum seven-year driving licence disqualification.
