Speaking exclusively to FMT, the source also said, “According to his family, he has repented and has promised not to reoffend.”Selva Kumar’s family, the source added, is hoping he will be able to clear his name.
“I also hope he can do so as he has truly repented,” he said, denying current news reports that the Canadian authorities and even the prison where he was for 24 years until his release last weekend, have said he is unrepentant and likely to rape or molest again.
The source revealed that Selva Kumar comes from a wealthy family. His late father was a senior government officer. His mother resides in Sungai Buloh, Selangor. According to previous reports, he was a former Penang Free School student.
The source told FMT that while Selva was in Canada, he married a local woman but they later divorced.
The source disputed media reports that Selva Kumar had victimised over a thousand women in Canada, adding that such claims were “illogical”.
He was referring to a report in Canadian daily Hamilton Star, where the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada was told of the high possibility that Selva Kumar had assaulted “500 to 1,000” more victims across Canada in the 1980s.
Selva Kumar, who is now 56 years old, returned to Malaysia today after spending 24 years in a Canadian prison.
In 1992, he was found guilty by an Ontario court on 19 counts of sexual assault, 28 counts of administering a drug or noxious substance, 10 counts of various kinds of assault and a dozen other charges, including extortion.
Canadian media have dubbed him “Canada’s worst rapist”, who used powerful drugs to render his victims unconscious before he molested and raped them. Among his victims was a 13-year-old girl.
The source does agree that a little over 30 years ago, Selva Kumar Subbiah was an attractive young man who charmed many ladies.
It eventually reached a point where his parents found Selva Kumar to be a “handful”.
“So they decided to send him to Canada to study,” the source said.
And that is where the troubles began.
