National Water Services Commission (SPAN) chairman Liang Teck Meng today released a statement ordering water companies to respect their consumers’ needs during festive seasons.
Liang also told water companies to prepare alternative sources of electricity for such disruptions such as generators or to use the second power supply source provided by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).
“We urge water companies to discuss with TNB the rental of generators during scheduled maintenance works involving any disruption of TNB’s electricity supplies.”
Liang said SPAN would also be working with TNB and the water companies involved to ensure the maintenance works, which began this morning in the Klang Valley, will be resolved within the scheduled 16 hours.
“Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd has been asked to restore water supply as quickly as possible and to manage the delivery of water via lorries for emergencies and large ceremonies,” Liang said.
Today, TNB announced it decision to go ahead with maintenance works at its Bukit Badong substation facility, which will affect three Sungai Selangor water treatment plants that supply water to 60% of residents in the Klang Valley.
The backlash has been immense, with 814 locations set for water disruptions.
Some of the 3.9 million affected residents have been taking to social media to criticise both TNB and the Selangor government.
Those celebrating Christmas are especially upset as regular water supply will be restored only on the eve (Saturday).
