Commenting on today’s Federal Court ruling which dismissed Anwar’s review application over his Sodomy 2 conviction, Rahman said it was a decision that should be respected by everyone.
“The court is an independent institution. I’m sure the judges have considered all the facts presented in the case.
“Whoever it is that is being tried in court should have full confidence in this fact,” he told FMT.
The opposition should also look for another prime ministerial candidate if they ever come to power, he added.
PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli had yesterday suggested a plan that resembled his previous “Kajang Move”, in the hope of making Anwar the prime minister should Pakatan Harapan (PH) win the next general election.
“One of the PKR lawmakers who just won can vacate his seat, and as early as two weeks after the GE14 polling date, Anwar can win a parliamentary seat and subsequently take his oath as prime minister,” he had said in a statement.
Rahman, however, said this plan, just like the Kajang Move, was politically and morally wrong.
“It is as if the opposition has no one else capable of being a leader. That’s why it is bending over backwards to ensure Anwar becomes the prime minister.
“But it’s worrying to see how a political party that is aiming to become the government only has one choice for the role, and is willing to do whatever it takes to make this a reality.
“And what about (PKR deputy president) Mohamed Azmin Ali? Or (PKR president) Dr Wan Azizah (Wan Ismail), (Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president) Muhyiddin Yassin and Mukhriz Mahathir?
“Are they incapable of leading the country for the opposition?”
Umno Supreme Council member Nur Jazlan Mohamed, on the other hand, laughed off Rafizi’s plan, saying it would only be a waste of public resources.
The 2014 Kajang Move saw PKR’s Lee Chin Cheh resigning from his elected post of Kajang assemblyman to allow Anwar the opportunity to contest the seat.
However, the Court of Appeal’s decision to overturn Anwar’s acquittal on a charge of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, and sentencing him to five years’ jail instead, disqualified him from doing so.
Anwar’s wife, Wan Azizah, took his place and won the by-election.
