The daily had notified DOSH of a scaffolding that looked flimsy under the Kota Darul Ehsan Arch and staff from the department’s office in Selangor visited site and issued an order for the danger to be cleared.
The Kota Darul Ehsan Arch, which indicates the border between Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya on the Federal Highway, is being refurbished and upgraded at a cost of RM9.7 million by the Selangor government.
Thanks to DOSH’s action, the flimsy scaffolding and other construction materials on a steel beam, which was placed about 10 metres above the ground, have since been removed.
“Our Selangor DOSH officers visited the site and the main contractor was called to our office to discuss the safety aspects,” DOSH Deputy Director-General Omar Mat Piahsaid told theSun.
He added that a notice of prohibition had also been issued to the project contractor to ensure the safety of the site.
“We would like to stress that the main contractors should be responsible. They should be more stringent in monitoring safety and adhering to the regulations. We (DOSH personnel) cannot be at the scene all the time, ” Omar was quoted as saying by theSun.
The danger posed to drivers and other road users from construction sites has been heightened after two significant incidents in a matter of months.
On Nov 4, two people were killed when a piling rig fell on top of their vehicle, as they were driving in Meru, Klang.
On Aug 25, a 24-year-old woman was killed when a crane hook, weighing almost half a tonne, fell on her car, as she was stuck in the evening rush hour traffic jam on Jalan Raja Chulan, in Kuala Lumpur.
