Najib said although the programme ended last year, a decade after it was launched, the government decided to retain the main initiatives under the Bumiputera Empowerment Agenda (BEA).
“One of the principles under the GLCT programme is the National Development Agenda which include equal growth principle and Bumiputera community development,” he said at a press conference after chairing a meeting of the Bumiputera Economic Council at the Parliament building here.
“Although the GLCT programme was certified in 2015, Khazanah Nasional, as the secretariat for the programme, will continue its role and the BEA implementation structure until 2020, to ensure greater benefits for the Bumiputera community.”
He also told reporters present that after two years, visible success was achieved in seven main sectors which are vendor development programme (VDP), human capital, non-financial asset ownership, Bumiputera-owned equities in the corporate sector and acquisition, among others.
He said Government-Linked Investment Companies (GLICs) and the G20 have recorded an overall initiative value of RM44.7 billion for 2015 compared with 2014’s of RM43.8 billion.
“Five GLICs and 17 main GLCs, as a whole, stated an achievement of 91.5% under the Key Performance Index (KPI) in undertaking various primary initiatives for the BEA in 2015.
“Among the successes of the GLICs and G20 was procurement of RM11.8 billion from Bumiputera companies, while RM2.3 billion was carved-out for Bumiputera companies.
“Also, the GLICs and G20 appointed 49 new vendors under the VDP, creating two retail chain consortiums and livestock, as well as training 9,544 graduates under 1Malaysia Training Scheme(SL1M).
“I, and the other ministers, are involved in amending the BEA KPI and through the ‘White Room’ session with chairpersons and chief executive officers of the GLICs and G20 (Top 20 GLCs), the commitment of the companies will be enhanced to continue implementing the BEA in them.”
Among those present at the meeting were Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Abdul Wahid Omar, International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed and Khazanah Nasional Bhd’s Chief Executive Officer Azman Mokhtar.
