KUALA LUMPUR:
A man paid a heavy price for his negligence in leaving a bag unattended when it led to a bomb scare at the Pasar Seni LRT station here yesterday.

The incident caused panic amongst LRT commuters and forced a temporary closure of the station for about 20 minutes, beginning 11.24am.

Rapid KL spokesman Lim Jin Aun, in a statement yesterday, pointed out that a middle-aged man used a chain and padlock to fasten his black-coloured luggage bag to the platform railing before walking away.

“His bag was spotted by station staff who then alerted the Operational Control Centre (OCC) at Subang Depot.

Taking no chances on safety, the OCC alerted the police before directing the station to be closed as a bomb disposal squad arrived at the station,” he said.

Lim said a man who claimed to be the owner of the bag, arrived at the scene while the police and bomb squad personnel were taking steps to check the bag.

“Upon instructions by the police and the bomb squad, he opened the bag that was stuffed with his personal belongings,” he said.

Lim added that the man was detained to facilitate investigations.

He reminded commuters not to leave their bags and other belongings unattended while at LRT and monorail stations and bus hubs as it could spark alarm amongst commuters and authorities.

“It is also unlawful to chain your belongings to railings at the stations. Action will be taken against you,” he warned.

Dang Wangi police chief ACP Zainol Samah confirmed the incident.
