Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the investigation found that the incident was due to negligence, particularly in failing to close the van door properly, rather than any attempt to steal or rob the money.
“It’s a genuine case (where) things dropped off. We’ve found no element of crime, either of theft or robbery.
“It is not a conspiracy but rather negligence. For further action, the investigation paper regarding this case has been submitted to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP),” he told reporters here today.
Hussein said the absence of criminal elements was confirmed through witness testimony and CCTV footage tracking the security van’s route from the collection point at Ampang Point, along the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Expressway, to its final destination at a bank in Kuala Lumpur.
Upon arriving at the bank, the two security guards on board noticed that the rear door was open and the bag was missing.
Earlier reports indicated that the missing bag was found on the same day by passersby using the highway. The bag is believed to have fallen off when the vehicle was navigating a sharp turn.
Hussein said the duo, initially detained to assist in the investigation, were released on police bail two days ago.
“The money is in the custody of the police and we are now awaiting the DPP’s decision before the bag containing cash amounting to RM1,071,000 is returned to its owner,” he said.
