KAPIT:
Rescuers have resumed a search for a longhouse chief who is missing after a longboat capsized in the Baleh River near Karangan Ara here on Friday.

Kupa anak Manggom, 43, two other men and a woman were returning to their longhouse at Nanga Stapang by the Nanga Gaat, a tributary of the Baleh, when the boat was struck by strong currents and capsized.

Three others on the longboat who clung to the sinking vessel were rescued by Karangan Ara longhouse residents.

Kupa’s brother Kanchin said teams from the Sarawak Rivers Board and the Kapit Fire and Rescue Department were conducting the search-and-rescue operation.

He said the search, which begun immediately after the incident at 2.22pm, was called off late yesterday due to failing light.
