Who doesn’t love a fresh, steaming serving of pao (or bao), the delectable Asian bun with delicious sweet or savoury fillings? It’s perfect as a snack or treat, or even as a main meal!
Well, located at Kaki Bukit, a small town in the northern state of Perlis, is a well-known pao shop called Kedai Kopi Khuan Bee. It’s strategically located a short distance away from Kelam Cave, and if you happen to be heading to this tourist destination – itself a neat place to visit – chances are, you will drive by this little mom-and-pop shop on your way.
Khuan Bee is really popular and often sells out quickly, especially on weekends. The shop opens at 11am but, to be sure of your order, to call ahead to “book” your pao. Otherwise, it’s supposedly easier to get your fix on weekdays.

The bestselling items here are the big pao and “lor mai kai”, or steamed glutinous rice with chicken. There’s also “char siew”, “sang yuk” (steamed sliced pork), veggie, kaya, red bean, and other pao for the taking.
The big pao is stuffed with plenty of meat, hard-boiled egg, mushroom and other ingredients, resulting in a delicious filling that complements the fluffy bun at a good ratio. This and the char siew pao were both delicious, despite this writer having kept them in the fridge overnight and reheating them in the microwave.
As with most things in Perlis, prices are reasonable at below RM6 for the big pao. So go ahead and indulge!
