[NON-HALAL]
When it comes to Vietnamese food, most people are familiar with pho, or Vietnamese noodle, which is commonly served with beef or chicken dry-style or with a rich broth.
Well, just like most other cuisines, Malaysia’s northern neighbour has other delicacies to offer, including another favourite: banh mi!
Banh mi – which means bread – is a short baguette purportedly introduced to Vietnam by the French. The crust is crispy while the interior soft and airy; and stuffed within it can be any sort of ingredient, usually savoury: egg, chicken, pork, beef, ham, tuna – whatever you fancy.
Banh mi makes for a good on-the-go meal, not entirely unlike subs or sandwiches.
If you happen to be in Klang and are looking for a delicious Vietnamese meal, check out the unofficial “Vietnamese town” located between Klang Parade and Taman Eng Ann. There, you will find Vi Bread House, a specialty store offering banh mi.
This establishment is so authentic that it largely uses Vietnamese language on its menu, which makes ordering a bit tricky – although, thankfully, the staff here also speaks Mandarin!
Among the items served here are:
- xíu mại trứng muối: shumai and salted egg
- thịt nướng: grilled pork
- bánh ướt chả lụa nem chua: steamed thin rice pancake and Vietnamese sausage with fermented pork
- xôi mặn: steamed sticky rice

For banh mi fillings, options include:
- chả lụa: Vietnamese sausage
- dăm bông: ham
- chà bông: meat floss
- xíu mại: shumai
- bì: pork skin (not crispy)
The first banh mi offering on the menu has a meatball with salted egg yolk filling. Red chilli, coriander, cucumber, carrots, and the juice from the meatball complete the sandwich, which is re-toasted prior to serving to ensure crispness. Delicious!
There are over a dozen sandwich varieties to choose from here, priced at RM10-12, so you will have to make multiple visits to try them all.
