It’s generally a rule of thumb to eat where the locals do. If you’re in Kangar, Perlis, then one place you should go for laksa is a place called Beng Laksa, run by… well, Mr Beng himself!

This humble business used to operate from a kopitiam before moving to its current location, and by all accounts, fans have followed Mr Beng from the previous spot to this one.

As such, finding a vacant table here can be a bit of a challenge, especially on weekends. Once you secure yourself a seat, however, service is pretty quick.

In Perlis, the laksa is generally similar to the version served in Penang. At Beng Laksa, you can opt for asam laksa – the perennial favourite – or the lemak variety that’s richer and more flavoursome with a broth infused with added santan for that extra aroma.

Otherwise the ingredients in both versions are essentially the same – fresh vegetables including lettuce, mint leaves and onions, fish, and optional “hair ko” (prawn paste), plus free flow of bird’s-eye chilli to give it a real kick!

If you can’t decide between the two varieties, go for the best of both worlds by combining them. The result will be a steaming hot bowl that is everything any laksa fan could want.

The thin noodles served at Beng Laksa are perfect for soaking up the delicious broth, while the balanced taste, rich aroma, and fresh ingredients result in an absolutely tummy-warming and mouth-searing experience.

To cool down after, order some cendol as a dessert or drink. The finely ground ice, gula Melaka, green jelly and red beans work wonders in diffusing the effects of the cili padi on your taste buds.
