If you’re in the vicinity of Taman Putra in Kuala Lumpur and have a craving for a hearty meal of noodles with succulent seafood, then make a beeline for Taman Putra Fresh Prawn Noodle restaurant.

As its name suggests, this eatery specialises in freshwater river prawns, also known as udang galah. Native to this region, this crustacean has a rather large head compared to its body and can grow to over 30cm in length.

The restaurant itself is a little cluttered, with tables seemingly arranged in a haphazard style. Still, this is easy to overlook if you keep your focus on the food, not the ambience. And there certainly is a wide variety of food here to choose from!

Their default noodle is yee mee, though you could go for other options such as mihun. Sizes for the freshwater prawn start at “X small” (RM18) all the way to 10XL (RM170).

This writer went with an order of 3XL for two persons and was impressed by its serving size, with more than enough noodles to satisfy. In fact, the prawn will leave you wondering just how huge 10XL is, given how large it is at 3XL!

Anyone who loves the “juice” from the prawn head will certainly enjoy this udang galah: it’s thick and flavourful, though it will probably trigger gout for anyone who’s sensitive. (Some might say it’s worth it, though the jury’s out on that.)

The yee mee, too, is tasty and well prepared, with a smooth and creamy egg-drop sauce that will please your palate.

Also on the menu are items such as steamed crab, curry fish head, coconut soup, fried rice, veggies, and an assortment of other noodle dishes such as beef hor fun. The sambal prawn petai (RM30) is a good dish in and of itself, though it probably pairs better with steamed rice than noodles.

All in all, seafood lovers will be satisfied with the fare at Taman Putra Fresh Prawn Noodle, and it’s definitely worth the journey eastward across the Klang Valley to get your fill.
