They say if you want to have the best and freshest ingredients, it’s best to grow your food yourself. Or you could pay a visit to The Gift Tilapia, tucked away in Negeri Sembilan’s charming capital.

This farm-to-table establishment has been in business for well over a decade. The proprietors rear their own tilapia (as the name might suggest), as well as udang galah (giant freshwater prawn) and free-range chicken – all on their own premises with a natural water source, far from the pollution of the city.

As a result, you get to enjoy a delectable feast that can’t possibly get any fresher!

Case in point: the udang galah is served live on ice with a boiling pot of water; a quick dip for less than a minute and it’s perfectly cooked with a pleasant orange hue.

Peel off the shell, suck on the head (if you’re so inclined) to avoid wasting a single drop of the rich juice, dip the meat into some superior soy sauce, and it’s a delectable seafood experience!

That said, if you’re more squeamish or sympathetic to the creatures’ plight, it’s understandable that you might want to give this a miss.

The farmed tilapia comes in two varieties: there’s the signature grilled version with soy sauce, and the Portuguese grilled. Both taste fresh (simply because they are!), homey and “natural”, for lack of a better word – exactly how one expects fish to taste.

The Portuguese version packs a bit of a punch, so this should satisfy any spice lover.

The poached chicken is accompanied by a fragrant chilli sauce and plenty of minced ginger. As is usually the case with free-range chicken, the meat is more muscular and slightly tougher, but carries more of a concentrated flavour.

Other dishes you should try are the steamed freshwater prawns, sweet and sour pork for non-halal diners, and their veggie offerings.

The pork, in particular, is noteworthy as the sauce has less of that “ketchup” flavour often found in other restaurants.

All in all, the dishes here have a certain charm that might bring you back to an easier time before the age of the internet. So drop by The Gift Tilapia and you will understand why it’s a popular eatery in Seremban – a real gift, indeed.
