If you happen to be in Penang, one dish you absolutely need to savour is curry mee. Superior to the instant-noodle version now ubiquitous in supermarkets – and often referred to as curry laksa in other parts of the country – this is the real deal.

In fact, curry mee is largely considered one of the essential hawker foods one must enjoy on the island, alongside char kuey teow, prawn (Hokkien) mee, and asam laksa.

Most of the good curry mee stalls in Penang operate in the mornings and afternoons, but if you’re hankering for a hot bowl of fragrant spicy broth and noodles in the evenings, head to Mount Erskine in Tanjung Tokong.

The curry mee stall is located in the market area close to the temple and in front of Kang Hoe kopitiam, and is actually run by this writer’s childhood friend Ah Yong!

They offer “proper” Penang-style curry mee with a santan-based white soup made even more awesome thanks to fragrant sambal with a real kick.

The result is a dish that any curry-mee connoisseur will love, complete with the prerequisite prawns, cockles, bean sprouts, and coagulated pork blood.

If you wish to indulge a bit more, ask for extra side ingredients. This writer ordered a small serving of curry mee with extras on the side which set him back RM9, while a small bowl of curry mee on its own was only RM6.

All in all, expect a satisfying meal for a very affordable price. Enjoy!
