CJ tops king’s birthday honours list, receives ‘Tun’ title

'Pocket Rocketman' Azizulhasni Awang conferred Darjah Bakti for outstanding achievement and contributions to cycling and elevating Malaysia's standing on the world stage.

Chief Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh headed the list of 144 recipients of awards, medals and honours conferred in conjunction with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim’s official birthday celebration at Istana Negara today.

Wan Farid, 63, who was appointed the country’s 17th chief justice on July 28 last year, is the sole recipient of the Darjah Seri Setia Mahkota (SSM), which carries the title “Tun”.

Sultan Ibrahim conferred the 2026 federal awards, medals, and honours at the investiture ceremony, which the Raja Permaisuri Agong, Raja Zarith Sofiah, also attended.

National track cycling champion Azizulhasni Awang was conferred the Darjah Bakti (DB), the country’s highest honour, for his outstanding achievement and contributions to cycling and for elevating Malaysia’s standing on the world stage.

With the conferment, Azizulhasni becomes only the third Malaysian athlete to receive the award, joining badminton legend Lee Chong Wei and squash great Nicol David, who were honoured in 2021 and 2024, respectively.

The award is limited to only 10 living recipients at any one time and does not carry a title.

The Darjah Panglima Mangku Negara (PMN), carrying the title “Tan Sri”, was awarded to the chief of defence force Malek Razak Sulaiman, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail, and Country Garden Pacificview Sdn Bhd executive director Daing A Malek Daing A Rahaman.

Treasury secretary-general Johan Mahmood Merican, foreign ministry secretary-general Amran Zin, and army chief Azhan Md Othman were among five individuals conferred the Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM), which also carries the “Tan Sri” title.

Air force chief Norazlan Aris and Yayasan Sultan Ibrahim Johor trustee Avinderjit Singh Harjit Singh were also awarded the PSM.

There were 10 recipients of the Darjah Panglima Jasa Negara (PJN), which carries the title “Datuk”, including Court of Appeal judge Leonard David Shim, higher education ministry secretary-general Aminuddin Hassim, investment, trade and industry ministry secretary-general Hairil Yahri Yaacob, Majlis Amanah Rakyat director-general Zulfikri Osman, and Malaysia’s ambassador to Russia Cheong Loon Lai.

Also receiving the PJN were Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka director-general Hazami Jahari, women and community activist Rugayah Abdul Majid, Mranti Corporation Sdn Bhd chairman Rofina Yasmin Othman, Telekom Malaysia group managing director and CEO Amar Huzaimi Md Deris, and Country Garden Pacificview Sdn Bhd executive director Teo Chee Yow.
