SEPANG:
A babysitter pleaded not guilty in the sessions court here today to abusing a five-month-old baby boy, causing his death in February.

Farisha Azniha Sobri, 24, was charged as the person having custody of the child with abusing the infant at a house in Kampung Sungai Merab Luar, Sepang, at about 11am on Feb 12.

She was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction.

The law also allows for a good behaviour bond with a surety, under conditions deemed appropriate by the court, as well as community service.

Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman allowed Farisha bail of RM5,000 with one surety. He also ordered her to report to the nearest police station once a month.

The court fixed May 21 for mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Saifuddin Rafiee appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Rohan Singh represented Farisha.
