KUALA LUMPUR:
The magistrates’ court here issued a RM3,500 fine to a 22-year-old restaurant worker who insulted the modesty of a 43-year-old woman at a public toilet at the Sentul LRT station last week.

Abdul Samad Osman, 22, pleaded guilty after the charge was read before magistrate Aina Azahra Arifin, who ordered him to serve four months in prison if he fails to pay the fine.

Samad was accused of insulting the victim’s modesty by spying on her while she was in a toilet cubicle at the LRT station at around 8am on April 16.

The charge was framed under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to five years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

His lawyer, CH Low of the National Legal Aid Foundation, pleaded for a lenient sentence, telling the court that his client only earned RM1,500 a month and had to support his parents.

Low said the accused promised not to repeat the offence, expressing remorse and apologising to the court and the victim’s family.

Deputy public prosecutor Syafika Azwa Fikri urged the court to impose a sentence commensurate with the offence to serve as a lesson to the accused.
