PETALING JAYA:
The government will give a 50% discount on toll charges nationwide in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced today.

He said the move is expected to cost the government about RM21.03 million in compensation to toll concessionaires.

The discount will take effect at 12.01am on March 18 and will end at 11.59pm on March 19.

It will only apply to Class 1 private vehicles and will not apply to tolls at the country’s borders, namely the Sultan Iskandar Building and Tanjung Kupang toll plazas.

In a statement, Anwar also announced that the insolvency department will fast-track bankruptcy discharges for 4,000 people ahead of Aidilfitri, particularly for single parents.

He said these were additional initiatives to help Malaysians celebrating the festive season, on top of the extra public holiday for Aidilfitri, the early payout of the second phase of Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah aid, and special cash assistance for civil servants, among others.

“At the same time, I urge Malaysians again to spend wisely as they celebrate Aidilfitri. Amid this global economic uncertainty, everyone needs to be disciplined in managing their finances.”
