Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat said the suspect’s brother fled following the attack and remains at large.
He described the brother as armed and dangerous.
“We received information from Thai police that the main suspect surrendered and was arrested at about 6pm (local time) yesterday.
“Police are also investigating claims that the suspect holds dual citizenship,” Bernama reported him as saying.
Yusoff said the suspect does not have a criminal record in Malaysia, but police will conduct further investigations based on forthcoming information.
“We are awaiting details from the Thai police, including his background,” he said.
He also said police have tightened security at the Malaysia-Thailand border and set up roadblocks to track down the suspect’s younger brother.
Earlier today, Utusan Malaysia reported a spokesman for the Sungai Golok police station as saying the suspect, a former import player for the Kelantan football team, turned himself in last night.
The suspect also handed over two pistols believed to have been used in the incident.
