PETALING JAYA:
Bersatu Supreme Council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan has been told to focus on defending himself against corruption charges in court instead of attacking party secretary-general Azmin Ali, amid growing demands for disciplinary action against him.

Wan Saiful had said that Azmin was unfit to lead the party as long as the controversy surrounding a 2019 video, allegedly of the former minister engaging in homosexual acts, remained unresolved.

Today, Bersatu’s 10 Selangor assemblymen, including Dr Afif Bahardin (Taman Medan) and Hilman Idham (Gombak Setia), accused the Tasik Gelugor MP of attempting to divert attention from his own legal troubles by reviving old allegations against Azmin.

“His prosecution shows that the authorities have a solid basis, and he should answer these charges in court rather than attacking others with baseless accusations,” they said in a statement, referring to Wan Saiful’s Jana Wibawa case.

The assemblymen noted that police had thoroughly investigated the 2019 video for more than eight months, and that in January 2020, the then attorney-general had concluded there was no case to prosecute.

“Wan Saiful and his allies are twisting the facts to create a new narrative after their failed plot to topple the president (Muhyiddin Yassin) through a statutory declaration,” the assemblymen said, adding that they should be expelled from the party.

Johor Bersatu chairman Sharuddin Jamal said the matter concerning Wan Saiful must be promptly handled by the disciplinary board to preserve confidence in the party’s credibility.

“As a political organisation grounded in the principles of order and ethics, any breach of discipline or conduct that tarnishes the party’s image cannot be taken lightly,” he said in a statement today.

Sharuddin also pledged Johor Bersatu’s full support for Muhyiddin to continue leading the party as well as Perikatan Nasional, expressing confidence in his ability to navigate the current challenges and resolve outstanding issues.

In Terengganu, state chief Razali Idris called for transparent and timely disciplinary action, warning that delays would harm Bersatu’s integrity.

He also hit out at leaders making public statements that cast Bersatu’s leadership in a negative light.

“Any dissatisfaction or defence must be raised through the proper channels, namely proceedings before the disciplinary board, not through press conferences or open statements that weaken the party’s image,” Razali said.
