PETALING JAYA:
The government’s BUDI95 initiative, which sees Malaysians paying only RM1.99 per litre for RON95 petrol, has recorded nearly three million users – with sales surpassing RM91 million in just four days.

Finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan said around two million users have benefitted from the initiative as of 6pm after it was rolled out to all Malaysians today.

“The rollout went smoothly today, and we did not receive many complaints,” he said during a BUDI95 monitoring session at the Petronas Sri Hartamas station in Kuala Lumpur.

“Traffic may have been heavier than usual as many were eager to take advantage of the lower fuel price.”

He also said the government is in discussions with the Sabah and Sarawak state governments to enable boat owners to benefit from the BUDI95 initiative.

“We’ve heard from those with outboard engine boats that they can’t access the subsidy. In principle, we agree they should be eligible, with qualification criteria to be determined.

“So, we are discussing with the Sabah and Sarawak governments, and data from these boat owners will be included in the system so that they too can qualify.”

Amir said while subsidised petrol is also being given to those whose driving licences had expired less than three years ago, he encouraged them to renew their licences.

Around 16 million Malaysians aged 16 and above with valid driving licences are eligible for the subsidised rate of RM1.99 per litre compared with the current market price of RM2.05 per litre, with each individual entitled to a maximum of 300 litres a month.

E-hailing services are exempted from this limit.

The system was opened last Saturday to 300,000 military and police personnel.
