Ipoh police chief Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said a report was lodged on Sept 19 at the Menglembu police station.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation of a family member and Section 29(1)(a) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 for animal cruelty.
“The suspect is currently out on bail until the investigation is completed,” he said in a statement.
Abang Zainal advised the public not to further circulate any videos or statements that could cause public unrest and said the police view acts of animal cruelty seriously.
Yesterday, animal rights group Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM) urged those who had witnessed the incident to lodge reports with the police and veterinary services department after a video of it went viral.
The 90-second video shows a man chasing after a dog and hitting it with a metal rod, with a woman trying but failing to stop him.
The video then cuts to the dog lying on a table and bleeding profusely.
SAFM said the perpetrator is believed to be the dog owner’s son.
