TIANJIN:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim began a four-day working visit to China today at the invitation of Chinese president Xi Jinping to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

He arrived this evening and headed directly to a gala dinner hosted by Xi, the current chair of the organisation.

On Monday, Anwar, as chair of Asean, will deliver remarks at the SCO Plus summit, on Malaysia’s commitment to positioning the country and Asean as a trade and investment hub.

He will also deliver a public lecture on “Sovereign Interdependence: Building a Shared Future in Asia” at Tianjin University, the oldest modern university in China.

Anwar is also scheduled to attend a parade in Tiananmen Square on Sept 3 to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

The visit is Anwar’s fourth to China since assuming office in November 2022.

China is Malaysia’s largest trading partner with two-way trade valued at RM484 billion in 2024, representing 16.8% of Malaysia’s total global trade (RM2.8 trillion).
