S Chandrasegaran was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 with making a video containing false content.
The impugned video was uploaded on TikTok account “cikguchandra3” at 1.36pm on Dec 30, 2024.
Chandrasegaran faces a fine of up to RM50,000, a jail sentence that can extend up to five years, or both, if found guilty.
Judge Nor Hasniah Razak granted him bail of RM7,000 with one surety.
She also ordered him to surrender his passport to the court and report to a nearby police station once a month pending the disposal of his case.
Chandrasegaran’s lawyer, Muhammad Nor Tamrin, urged the court earlier to impose a minimum bail, saying his client is a cancer patient, has a permanent disability, and no source of income.
He also said Chandrasegaran did not pose a flight risk, and had appeared before the court of his own volition today.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Sofea Jaysal appeared for the prosecution.
The court fixed Oct 13 for mention of the case.
