KUALA LUMPUR:
A wushu coach was today sentenced to 13 years in jail for sexually assaulting one of his students three years ago.

Judge Tasnim Abu Bakar handed down the sentence on Gjeblehim Bong after ruling that the defence failed to raise a reasonable doubt to the prosecution’s case.

She also ordered him to be whipped four times.

The court instructed Bong to attend counselling sessions while serving his prison sentence, as well as to be placed under the police’s supervision for three years after his release.

Bong had touched his then 10-year-old female student’s breast at the Dong Wu Academy, Jalan Klang Lama, on April 13, 2022.

He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act, which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years if found guilty.

Bong is currently serving a jail term for another sexual assault case also involving a child.

Lawyer Tharamjit Singh represented Bong while deputy public prosecutor Nur Shakila Shariff appeared for the prosecution.

Bong, a Sarawakian, was a former national wushu exponent who represented Malaysia at the 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur.
