JOHOR BAHRU:
Nearly 40,000 consumer accounts in Johor Bahru and Skudai were affected on Wednesday after excessive ammonia was detected in the raw water supplying the Sultan Ismail water treatment plant in Skudai.

Ranhill SAJ CEO Anuar Abdul Ghani described the situation as a serious contamination incident that directly impacted the clean water supply to residents in the affected areas.

“High concentrations of ammonia can pollute river water and make it unsafe for use. This not only harms the environment but also poses health risks to the public,” he said in a statement today.

The state’s sole water operator has since taken proactive steps to manage the situation and said it has brought down the number of affected accounts to under 1,000.

The company is monitoring water quality in impacted areas, collaborating with agencies to identify the contamination source, and implementing immediate mitigation.

It also organised a solat sunat istisqa (prayer for rain) at the treatment plant, led by Johor Islamic religious department takmir teacher Zunnurain Abdul Khohar. The session was attended by company staff and nearby residents.

Ranhill SAJ called on all quarters, including communities and industries, to play an active role in protecting rivers and the environment to safeguard the long-term sustainability of Johor’s clean water resources.
