
He replaces Rusdi Isa, who was appointed director of the Bukit Aman commercial crime investigation department on June 25.
The handover of duties was held at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters, witnessed by Hamzah Ahmad, director of Bukit Aman’s integrity and standards compliance department.
Hamzah congratulated Usuf on his appointment as acting Kuala Lumpur police chief until a new chief is named.
“I am confident that with his extensive experience, credibility and leadership, this contingent will continue to achieve success, maintain stability and earn the respect of the community,” Bernama reported him as saying.
Rusdi expressed his appreciation to the Kuala Lumpur police personnel for their commitment to ensuring the success of various initiatives throughout more than a year of his service.
“I urge them to continue carrying out this responsibility with an unwavering spirit. We are not only safeguarding security but also upholding the trust of the community and the future of the nation,” he said.
Earlier, Rusdi said the crime statistics index in Kuala Lumpur for the first six months of the year recorded a 28% drop compared with the same period last year.
“Violent crime decreased by 29% from 790 cases in 2024 to 563 cases in 2025 for the same period. Property crime also recorded a 27% drop, from 3,377 cases in 2024 to 2,453 cases this year,” he said.
Separately, Selangor deputy police chief Zaini Abu Hassan has been appointed as the acting state police chief, effective tomorrow.
He succeeds Hussein Omar Khan, who will assume his new role as director of the Bukit Aman narcotics criminal investigation department on July 21.
The handover of duties was held at the Selangor police headquarters and witnessed by police management department director Abdul Aziz Abdul Majid.
Hussein thanked the police leadership for their trust and support in his two years and five months at the helm, highlighting key achievements, such as a 12% reduction in the crime index last year and the successful foiling of major drug smuggling attempts.
