Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said the other three victims being treated at Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru were in stable condition.
Bernama reported him as saying all five received immediate medical attention from specialist doctors at the hospital shortly after the incident.
Khalid said three of the victims are members of the police’s air wing unit, while the other two are attached to the Tanjung Kupang police station.
On claims that the helicopter was an ageing asset, Khalid said age is not a major factor if proper maintenance is carried out.
“Age is not a problem. What matters is that maintenance is done well. What happened was beyond our control,” he said.
Khalid said police would look after the welfare of all the personnel involved and their families.
Earlier today, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia confirmed a police helicopter was involved in an accident near Sungai Pulai in Gelang Patah this morning.
The civil aviation regulator said that all five on board, including the pilot, survived and were rescued by marine police.
Khalid said in a previous statement that the AS355N aircraft was taking part in a regional security training exercise when the crash happened at about 10.25am.
“The helicopter was participating in a multi-agency simulation exercise held in conjunction with the Malaysia-Indonesia-Thailand-Singapore Nuclear Security Detection Exercise 2025,” he said.
Khalid also said a thorough probe would be conducted by the Air Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) under the transport ministry.
Separately, Bukit Aman internal security and public order department director Azmi Abu Kassim identified the five victims as pilot Faizul Mohammad, co-pilot Ahmad Bustamin Baharom, Adeline Liu, Siti Latipa Khairuddin and RG Devendran.
He said police had set up an internal investigation team to assist AAIB in probing the crash, and would also establish a committee to assess the current use of the helicopter by the police’s Air Operations Force.
“A committee will be appointed immediately to conduct a holistic evaluation specifically of the AS355N helicopter, considering its service duration of over 28 years, reduced capabilities and other technical factors,” he said.
