PETALING JAYA:
A K9 dog unit will join in the search-and-rescue (SAR) operation for a man who went missing after his vehicle was swept away by strong currents while crossing Sungai Sumar in Kuala Betis, Gua Musang, Kelantan.

Gua Musang fire and rescue station chief Nor Azizi Che Noh said the SAR team had failed to locate the victim as of 4.30pm today.

“As such, we have requested the assistance of the K9 detection unit to join the SAR operation. The team will be sent to Pos Bihai via the department’s air unit.

“The operation had to be temporarily suspended today due to rain and diminishing daylight,” Bernama quoted him as saying today.

Nor Azizi said the operation was also joined by several other agencies, including the police, the Orang Asli development department and the health ministry, involving a total of 18 personnel and six vehicles.

The man was reported missing on May 20 after his four-wheel-drive vehicle failed to overcome strong currents while attempting to cross Sungai Sumar Betis.

Chan Chong Cheng, 51, was on his way to Pos Bihai for work-related matters with two other passengers at the time. The passengers managed to escape by breaking the vehicle’s window before it was swept away by the current.
