These include smart LED lighting that adjusts to natural light, a smart air-conditioning system which is expected to reduce energy consumption by 32%, and stabling yards for the upcoming installation of solar panels.
“We are very excited to embark on our journey, and we are honoured to look forward to making progress,” he said after signing a memorandum of understanding between Prasarana and UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB).
The MoU will see Prasarana and UNGCMYB launch a vendor hub here, dedicated to sustainable business practices.
The new online platform will build capacity for Prasarana’s 5,000 small- and medium-sized enterprise vendors through access to training, tools, and resources focused on environmentalism, sustainability and governance (ESG) principles.
Azharuddin also emphasised the company’s commitment to sustainable progress as a responsible government-owned entity.
He said the Vendor ESG Hub was part of Prasarana’s long-term vision to foster a stronger business ecosystem that supports SMEs and enhances public services, with the first cohort tentatively expected to commence in August.
The initiative is set to complement Prasarana’s broader sustainability blueprint, which includes initiatives focused on reducing carbon emissions through fleet electrification, increasing renewable energy usage, and supporting community-based programmes like the Santuni Madani initiative.
UNGCMYB’s executive director, Faroze Nadar, said that while sustainability initiatives were dominated by ESG principles, it was important for businesses to take a more holistic view of their impact.
He said for a business to play a truly transformative role in creating social environmental impact, it “must have head, hands, and most importantly, heart”.
“Often the focus tends to be on the head, the strategy, and the hand is the implementation.
“But it is the heart, the genuine belief in the responsibility to make our nation and the world the most sustainable place for all, which ensures positive and lasting sustainability.”
