PUTRAJAYA:
The Cabinet has given the transport ministry one month to complete its report on the crash in Teluk Intan, Perak, that killed nine Federal Reserve Unit personnel, says government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi, who is also the communications minister, said the report must be presented to the Cabinet before any action is taken.

“The transport minister (Loke Siew Fook) has informed us that a special task force will be formed to examine non-criminal aspects, particularly vehicle-related matters under the ministry’s jurisdiction.

“Meanwhile, the police will continue their investigation. So, there will be two separate probes,” he told a press conference after the Cabinet meeting chaired by deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Yesterday, Loke said the task force would comprise government and independent experts who would advise the transport ministry on the next course of action.

The 8.40am crash happened when a lorry carrying gravel hit an FRU truck transporting officers back from duty in Ipoh, killing nine of them, leaving two critically injured and seven with minor injuries.

While the cause is still under investigation, preliminary findings suggest that the lorry may have suffered a steering failure. The driver has since been arrested.

Fahmi said RM2,000 in emergency aid will be distributed today to five families of the victims in Perak.

“This evening, the home minister (Saifuddin Nasution Ismail) will visit five families in Perak and provide RM2,000 in immediate emergency assistance to each family. He is currently in the Teluk Intan and Ipoh area,” he said.
