Perak police chief Noor Hisam Nordin said seizing the weapon was standard procedure in investigations into individuals with a firearm permit, Bernama reported.
He also said Perak police filed an application to Bukit Aman to cancel Arafat’s permit on April 18, and that the PKR man had handed over the gun the following day.
“For now, we support cancelling the permit. The weapon is being kept at the Ipoh police headquarters,” he said.
Noor Hisam said investigations were ongoing and that 13 people, including Arafat and the complainant, had been summoned to give their statements.
An individual had claimed in a viral video that Arafat, a two-term assemblyman, had shown a pistol to members who were canvassing for votes.
Arafat had failed to defend his post as Tambun PKR chief during the divisional election on April 13, losing to Shamsul Kamar Ani.
