GEORGE TOWN:
Water supply was restored to 83% of affected areas in Penang this evening, with the remaining areas expected to have full supply tomorrow, after a scheduled supply interruption that began on Friday night.

Seberang Perai Utara, Seberang Perai Tengah and the Timur Laut district on the island have had supplies fully restored, with Seberang Perai Selatan at 90% and Barat Daya at 38%, chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said.

“It is expected that full restoration can be achieved by early tomorrow. Barat Daya is expected to catch up within hours due to improved preparation, although technical issues must also be taken into consideration,” he said.

Chow said maintaining reservoir water levels during the disruption allowed for quicker restoration compared to previous incidents, where depleted reservoirs delayed recovery.

The water shutdown, which affected 341,708 accounts across five districts, was carried out to allow for a RM25 million upgrade at the Sungai Dua water treatment plant involving 23 projects.
