PETALING JAYA:
Two by-products from sewage treatment have the potential to be a new source of income, says Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, the minister for natural resources, environment and climate change.

He said the sewerage department and Indah Water Konsortium was currently carrying out a pilot research project to commercialise the use of biosolids and bioeffluents, the two main by-products of sewage treatment.

The pilot plant turns biosolids from wastewater treatment into organic fertiliser for non-food crops.

The pilot project had the potential to reduce the rate of carbon emission by 2% per year, he told reporters after visiting a sewage treatment plant in Titiwangsa, Bernama reported.

“It is a very good starting point,” he said. “I also want to see the use of sewage by-products like this be expanded in supporting the circular economy.”
