Speaking at a press conference after a weekly Cabinet meeting today, Fahmi conveyed the Cabinet’s condolences over the pope’s passing on Monday.

“In Malaysia, Ewon Benedick (the entrepreneur development and cooperatives minister), officially represented the government to sign the condolence book at the Vatican Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

“Meanwhile, a minister will be sent to attend the memorial service for Pope Francis,” Fahmi said without naming the minister.

The communications minister also reiterated that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had described the late Pope as a vocal advocate, especially on issues concerning Gaza.

“As such, the prime minister deeply appreciates the late pope’s contributions and service.”

Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected pope in March 2013, becoming the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

His death was announced by the Vatican on Easter Monday, following a serious bout of double pneumonia.

Pope Francis’s funeral will be held in St Peter’s Square, Vatican City, followed by his burial at the Basilica of St Mary Major in Rome.
