In a statement issued on its portal, the Chinese-language daily’s management said the decision was made based on the principle of accountability.
“In light of the error involving the Jalur Gemilang on the front page of Sin Chew Daily, Sin Chew has decided to suspend the editors,” it said.
It added that the suspension is effective immediately and will remain in place until a police investigation into the matter concludes.
Earlier, Chan and Tsai spent nearly three hours giving their statements to the police.
Sin Chew had apologised over the mistake and said it would take disciplinary action against the staff members responsible for the gaffe.
It also said it would enhance the review procedures for its publications, particularly regarding the use of artificial intelligence.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim had weighed in on the controversy, saying Sin Chew’s mistake was unacceptable and that the news outlet should have been more vigilant.
Several quarters, including PAS and Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh, have demanded stern action against Sin Chew.
