Gas pipeline fire forces closure of key routes on Elite highway

Plus Malaysia Bhd is diverting traffic to alternative routes as a safety precaution.

Dashcam footage shared online shows that the blaze can be seen from the Elite highway.
PETALING JAYA:
Several key sections of the Elite highway have been closed following this morning’s gas pipeline fire at Jalan Putra Harmoni, Putra Heights, in Subang Jaya, Selangor.

Highway operator Plus Malaysia Berhad said the route between Seafield and Bandar Saujana Putra is now blocked to all vehicles for safety reasons.

“As a result, southbound drivers will be diverted to the Seafield Toll Plaza and can re-enter the Elite highway through the Bandar Saujana Putra Toll Plaza.

“Northbound drivers are instructed to exit at the Bandar Saujana Putra Toll Plaza and re-enter the Elite highway through the Seafield Toll Plaza,” it said in a posting on X.

In addition to the closure between Seafield and Bandar Saujana Putra, Plus said all entry points to the Elite highway through the USJ and Putra Heights Toll Plazas have been closed to traffic.

“Users are advised to plan their journey and use navigation apps, such as Waze or Google Maps, at this time,” it added.

The massive fire broke out earlier this morning from a leak in a Petronas Gas Bhd (PGB) main pipeline that is about 500m long.

Petronas has since shut off the pipeline valve, but the fire had spread to several homes in the nearby Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru, forcing residents to be evacuated.

A Bernama survey found that victims who suffered minor injuries were placed at the Sri Maha Kaliamman temple in Subang Jaya to receive treatment from health ministry personnel.

As of 11am, 30 people have received early treatment while some have been sent to hospitals in Serdang, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya for further treatment.

Separately, the environment department (DOE) said it will carry out air quality monitoring, Bernama reported.

Its director-general Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar said the Selangor DOE had deployed an initial team to the site to conduct a preliminary assessment.

“The public is advised to avoid areas near the fire,” he was quoted as saying.
