PETALING JAYA:
DAP, an opposition party in Sarawak, says it is prepared to work with the state’s ruling coalition in its dispute with the federal government over its oil and gas rights.

Sarawak DAP Youth secretary George Lam said the time has come for his party and Gabungan Parti Sarawak to call for a truce and end the politicking, The Borneo Post reported.

Lam said if GPS backed DAP’s long-standing proposal for Sarawak to hold a 30% stake in Petronas, the party was willing to “set aside differences”.

“If GPS is really fighting for Sarawak’s oil and gas rights and not merely claiming so, while accusing us of fighting against Sarawakians, then Sarawak DAP is ready to work with them.

“But if they won’t even fight for this, then stop claiming to protect Sarawakian rights,” he was quoted as saying.

Last month, Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen called on the state and federal governments to clarify details of an agreement in which he said Sarawak had once again surrendered its oil and gas rights to Putrajaya.

Chong’s remarks were in response to a parliamentary reply that an agreement had been reached between Petronas and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), the state’s sole gas aggregator, in a dispute over the state’s rights to distribute oil and gas, and levy a state sales tax on Petronas.

GPS component the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) had earlier this month challenged Chong to file a suit and let the court determine the constitutionality of the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) 1974.

Last week, the youth wings of DAP and SUPP accused each other of flip-flopping on their stance regarding a federal law amid the dispute.

Today, Lam again accused SUPP of flip-flopping over the issue and criticised the party for misleading the public in past elections by campaigning against the PDA, only to now reverse its position.
