PUTRAJAYA:
The government will not hold discussions on equal allocations for opposition MPs unless Perikatan Nasional submits proposals to amend the terms it deems “unfair” in the draft memorandum.

Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said the terms for equal funding were negotiated during the drafting of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) when PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin was the prime minister.

“If they have completely rejected our MoU and did not present their suggestions, what else can we discuss?

“If there’s a suggestion from them, I will bring it to the government parties and call the opposition to discuss (the terms),” he told reporters after an event at the energy transition and water transformation ministry today.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told the opposition to engage the government to discuss the MoU terms, which he said remain open to negotiation.

He was responding to Muhyiddin, who said PN had valid reasons to reject the draft, claiming that the conditions were too strict and unfair.

Fadillah said he was unaware of which conditions Muhyiddin found “strict and unfair” since PN had not communicated with him formally.

“If he thinks they are too strict, tell us. I’m waiting for their suggestions,” he said.

He also said Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was the only opposition member who had responded and submitted a formal letter on the matter.

On Saturday, it was reported that Syed Saddiq had agreed in principle to several terms of an agreement under which development funds for his constituency would be released.
