His senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, said Anwar is aware that certain parties with vested interests are attempting to create the perception of “double standards”.
“However, this is a baseless accusation. Anyone who insults any religion in Malaysia will be investigated and prosecuted,” he said in a broadcast on Facebook this afternoon.
Earlier today, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh called for immediate action against Zamri Vinoth over the controversial preacher’s social media post mocking the Hindu religion.
Ramkarpal said that allowing Zamri to go unpunished while acting against Era FM staff, comedian Harith Iskander, and social media user Cecelia Yap for similar cases risked creating the perception of selective prosecution.
The day before, Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh had implied that laws were not being applied fairly to all.
To counter these claims, Nashrul cited examples of past legal actions — fines of RM60,000 each for a company and supplier selling socks bearing the word “Allah”, RM400 for a hawker displaying a racially offensive sign and RM10,000 each for Harith and Yap.
According to Anwar, this shows that every case reported goes through the proper legal process and is handled according to existing laws.
“This serves as a firm message to all Malaysians to put an end to the culture of insulting any religion, culture or race in any space within the country.
“We must not allow trivial matters to undermine our strength and uniqueness, especially when our nation is progressing on a positive trajectory,” Nashrul said on Anwar’s behalf.
