The accountant, who only wanted to be known as Chin, said she received an anonymous phone call on Feb 12 demanding RM4,580. She said the caller threatened to send p-hailing riders to her home in Shah Alam to collect the money.

Chin said she later discovered that her domestic helper had borrowed RM1,250 from the loan shark, but her domestic helper had repaid the debt, including the interest.

“I initially thought that the caller was trying to intimidate me to get more money, but delivery riders turned up at my house later that day,” she said at a press conference organised by Gerakan here today.

Some 20 delivery riders turned up in front of her house between 5pm and 11pm that day, telling her that they were there to collect the money.

Chin said that after she lodged a police report, photographs of her family members and personal information such as her address and the licence plate number of the vehicles she owned were sent to her.

They were also posted on a Facebook group for residents in Shah Alam.

She said she received another phone call later that night threatening her that loan sharks will hound her at her workplace and harass her two children in school.

Selangor Gerakan chief Henry Teoh said they discovered three similar cases involving domestic helpers borrowing money from loan sharks in the same area.

“We believe there is a syndicate approaching the domestic helpers who happen to go to the same church, and persuading them to borrow money to play games online,” Teoh said.

He said they would follow up with the authorities on the matter.
