20-year-old woman arrested for dumping newborn at bus stop

Police arrested her hours after the baby boy was found in a paper bag in Pulau Tikus, Penang, this morning.

PETALING JAYA:
Police have arrested a woman who gave birth this morning for baby dumping.

The 20-year-old woman, suspected to be the mother of the newborn, abandoned her baby boy in a paper bag at a bus stop near Jalan Perak in Pulau Tikus, George Town, Penang.

A member of the public found the baby and alerted the police at around 10.14am, after which she was arrested at around 2.20pm.

In a statement, Timur Laut police chief Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the baby is believed to have been born at 8.03am this morning.

He said the case will be investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code, which deals with the exposure and abandonment of a child aged below 12.

“With the arrest of the suspect, the case has been successfully resolved.

“The police would like to express their gratitude to the concerned public for their cooperation and assistance in the investigation of this case,” he said.
