Police say the seizures, carried out in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, could be enough for about 1.1 million addicts.

PETALING JAYA:
Bukit Aman’s narcotics criminal investigation department (NCID) has crippled two drug trafficking syndicates in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, seizing RM12.88 million worth of drugs in separate operations on Feb 4 and 9.

NCID director Khaw Kok Chin said the first operation on Feb 4 targeted a syndicate involved in processing methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) powder, following several raids carried out in the Klang Valley, Bernama reported.

“Based on intelligence and surveillance findings, police managed to apprehend the leader of the syndicate at a parking lot in Taman Suntex, Cheras,” Khaw told a press conference at Bukit Aman today.

He said the suspect led police to a luxury condominium in Cheras, which served as a storage site for various types of drugs.

He said three men and one woman were arrested at the condominium, where police seized RM1.45 million worth of drugs, including 9.8kg of heroin base, 1.17kg of shabu, 233.45g of heroin, 131.83g of MDMA powder, and 113.17g of yaba pills.

“The seized drugs are estimated to be enough for 72,752 addicts,” he said, adding that police also confiscated two vehicles and three watches.

Khaw said an initial investigation revealed that the syndicate, which sourced drugs from a neighbouring country, had been active since October last year, using entertainment outlets in the Klang Valley as distribution points.

“The syndicate leader and two other members of the group have criminal records for eight to 20 offences related to drugs and other criminal activities.

“All five suspects, aged between 36 and 46, also tested positive for drugs,” he said.

In a separate raid on Feb 9, police arrested a 31-year-old man at a parking lot in Batu Caves and seized RM11.43 million worth of drugs.

The suspect led police to a condominium unit, where six gunny sacks containing 36 packets of shabu and 139 packets of ketamine were recovered.

“The total amount of drugs seized is estimated to be enough for 1.02 million addicts,” he said.

The suspect, who had no criminal record, was allegedly paid a salary of RM10,000 and earned RM2,000 in commission for each drug delivery.

Further investigations are being carried out under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, Khaw said.
