PETALING JAYA:
Security measures at shopping malls across the country will be tightened following a shooting at a shopping mall in Setia Alam, Shah Alam, last night.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said auxiliary police officers and security guards at shopping malls have been instructed to remain vigilant.

Razarudin said Selangor police have identified the suspect and various police units are tracking his whereabouts, with police in neighbouring states and border authorities also told to remain alert.

“We understand the public are concerned about this incident but we hope they refrain from making any speculation that could cause unnecessary alarm,” he told FMT.

Earlier today, Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan identified the suspect as a Malaysian man in his 30s who has a criminal record, with 11 previous cases, including for drug-related offences.

The victim, a cleaner at the shopping mall, was storing cleaning equipment when the suspect fired four shots, hitting the victim in the leg and buttocks.

The suspect then fled the scene, went to the parking zone, and forced a mall visitor at gunpoint to drive him out of the area.

The suspect ordered the driver to drop him off by the roadside near the Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas), after which the driver lodged a police report.

Hussein said six other police reports have been lodged over the incident, including one by the victim.

He added that the victim, who was rushed to Shah Alam Hospital for treatment, is in stable condition.

The case is being investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms (Heavier Penalties) Act 1971 for discharging a firearm during the commission of an offence, which carries the death penalty if convicted.

The case is also being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, which carries a 20-year jail term upon conviction.
