KUALA LUMPUR:
Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin has denied accusing Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of treason over the alleged royal addendum allowing Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his jail term under house arrest.

Hamzah clarified that he did not specifically name Anwar when suggesting that those who concealed the royal addendum were committing an act of treason.

“You can check the video (recording of the session) and the Hansard. I never said that,” he told a press conference at Parliament.

Yesterday, the government backbenchers club (BBC) accused Hamzah of making baseless and malicious claims in Parliament.

BBC said that Anwar had clarified that the supplementary order was never presented to him, but to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

The club also warned that such defamatory accusations could damage the relationship between the government and the royal institution.

Hamzah’s accusations had led to tensions flaring in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday. The Larut MP questioned whether hiding the existence of the decree amounted to an act of betrayal against the king and the nation.

Today, Hamzah called on the government to investigate who within its ranks was responsible for concealing the royal decree.

“We don’t know who hid it. What we know is that the court made a decision, the decree exists and it is held by the government,” he said.

“Who in the government is responsible? I don’t know, but that needs to be investigated.”
