Adding that 85% of households would not be affected by the hike, and that the tariff increase, expected in the second half of 2025, would not burden businesses, Anwar said that his statement yesterday was a response to a question raised by industry players.
“Yet there were those who misconstrued the statement,” he told the Dewan Rakyat.
He was responding to Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (PN-Machang), who asked why the government was flip-flopping on the electricity tariff hike.
Wan Fayhsal also said that investors and the market needed certainty on the matter.
Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported Anwar as saying that the electricity tariffs would have to be increased in the second half of the year. The portal later amended its report to better reflect the prime minister’s comment.
Speaking today, Anwar said the electricity tariffs would not be increased up to 14% and would be based on the imbalance cost pass-through mechanism, which adjusts electricity rates based on actual fuel cost fluctuations, reviewed every six months.
Electricity tariffs are set under the Energy Commission’s incentive-based regulation framework, reviewed every three years.
