GEORGE TOWN:
A 2km-long parade featuring 21 bullock carts was the highlight of a ponggal cultural festival held today in the Batu Uban state constituency.

The parade from Taman Brown to the Gelugor youth and sports complex drew more than 2,000 visitors from various backgrounds as well as state dignitaries.

Ponggal is a traditional harvest festival celebrated on Jan 14-15 by the Tamil community, marking the end of the winter solstice.

At the event, the Malaysia Book of Records recognised Penang for creating the largest wooden ponggal pot, standing 17ft (5m) in height. Batu Uban assemblyman A Kumaresan said the pot, made of wood and adorned with 200kg of fresh flowers, took three days to complete.
