PETALING JAYA:
The public whipping of a widower in Terengganu convicted of khalwat (close proximity) will be held on Dec 27, after being postponed from the initial date of Dec 6.

Terengganu executive councillor Khalil Abdul Hadi said this follows the Terengganu shariah appeals court’s unanimous decision on Dec 11 to uphold the punishment meted out to Affendi Awang, 42, by the shariah high court.

“The public whipping of the repeat khalwat offender will be held at the Al-Muktafi Billah Shah mosque in Ladang, Kuala Terengganu (after Friday prayers),” he said in a statement.

He reiterated that the punishment was meant to serve as a deterrent.

Affendi, a father of five, was sentenced to six strokes of the rotan after pleading guilty to a repeated offence of being in close proximity with a woman who was not his wife.

He had committed khalwat with a 52-year-old woman at a house in Kemaman on June 16.

Affendi, who was convicted of khalwat on two previous occasions, was also slapped with a RM4,000 fine, or six months in prison if he failed to pay the amount.
