Govt reviewing allowances for firefighters, says minister

Housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming says the welfare of fire and rescue department personnel will be improved.

There have been calls for Putrajaya to revise the salaries and allowances for firefighters in view of their increased workload and risks.
PUTRAJAYA:
The housing and local government ministry is reviewing the allowances for firefighters after it was highlighted that they were not compensated justly for their heavy workload and risks.

Its minister, Nga Kor Ming, said the ministry is looking into the matter.

“We are reviewing it and it’s within the ministry’s agenda to improve their welfare,” he told reporters after launching the Skuad Ihsan Madani flag-off event here today.

Last month, Pakatan Harapan’s Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman and Barisan Nasional’s Libaran MP Suhaimi Nasir called on Putrajaya to revise the salaries and allowances paid to firefighters.

Young Syefura pointed out that police officers could earn RM972 more than their firefighter counterparts in a year, while Suhaimi said the RM110 monthly incentive was no longer relevant and should be increased in line with current living conditions.

A week earlier, FMT reported about the challenges faced by firefighters in their line of duty.

They include the mismatch between their gruelling schedules and the compensation they received for working on public holidays without any replacement leave.

It was also said that senior fire department officials had submitted proposals for better allowances to the public services department three years ago, but there had been no positive developments to date.

Nga said the salaries for firefighters were increased this month in line with the salary adjustment under the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA).

“Next year, they will be increased again,” he said.
